Polyester content, garment color, and expected sublimation yield
Translate fabric composition and base color into realistic color expectations, testing decisions, and customer approvals.
Three variables answer different questions
“Is this shirt good for sublimation?” is too broad. Separate the decision into:
- Polyester or receptive polymer content: how much of the material can receive sublimation dye.
- Base color: what color already exists beneath the transferred dye.
- Fabric and garment construction: whether heat, pressure, seams, coatings, finishes, or dye migration create additional risk.
Sublimation ink does not create an opaque white underbase. The garment color remains part of the final appearance. A light gray polyester garment can be compatible with the chemistry and still produce a result that differs materially from the same transfer on white.
Composition is an expectation signal
High-polyester white fabric generally offers more receptive material and a neutral base for color. A polyester/cotton blend may intentionally produce a softer, muted, or vintage appearance because the non-polyester portion does not receive the dye in the same way.
Do not turn that principle into a guaranteed percentage-to-color formula. Knit, finish, white point, pretreatment, surface texture, and transfer system also affect the result. Treat the fiber-content label as a screening input, then test the exact style and color.
The settings finder preserves separate generic starting ranges from Sawgrass and Johnson Plastics Plus rather than averaging them. Those ranges are useful for trial planning, but an exact garment manufacturer’s instruction should take priority when available.
Base color changes the design
Because the dye layer is not opaque:
- white provides the most neutral base;
- pale colors mix visually with the transferred colors;
- heather structure can remain visible through the image;
- dark colors can overwhelm normal sublimation dye;
- fluorescent or strongly colored fabric can shift neutrals and brand colors.
Evaluate the design on the actual garment color. A screen mockup on white is not approval evidence for a gray, blue, or neon substrate.
Build a garment approval matrix
For each style and color you intend to sell, record:

Do not generalize one white sample to every color in a style. Dyed polyester can have different heat and migration behavior by color.
Troubleshoot weak color in the right order
When a transfer looks washed out, first compare it with a white, high-polyester control using the same print. If the control is strong, the garment’s composition or color is a leading explanation. If the control is also weak, investigate the print side, output workflow, compatible blank, and delivered heat before escalating multiple press variables.

Customer and production language
For blends or colored garments, approval language should describe the expected visual result rather than promise “full color.” Useful wording includes:
- “The garment color will show through the design.”
- “This blend is expected to produce a muted result.”
- “Brand-color matching is evaluated against the approved physical sample.”
- “Heat and dye-migration risk varies by garment color and lot.”
If the job requires an opaque image on dark fabric, move to the dark-apparel method decision instead of trying to solve opacity by adding more sublimation heat.
