Dark apparel: choose a transfer method instead of forcing sublimation
A decision guide for direct sublimation, sublimation HTV, and other opaque transfer paths when the garment is dark or low in polyester.
The constraint is opacity
Normal dye sublimation adds translucent dye to receptive polyester or a polymer coating. It does not place an opaque white layer beneath the image. On dark apparel, increasing time, temperature, pressure, or ink load does not create that missing white base; it increases the risk of scorching, press marks, dye migration, or fabric damage.
Begin with the required appearance and garment, then choose a method that can produce it.
Method decision
Direct sublimation
Use direct sublimation when the garment is light enough for the base color to remain part of the design and has suitable polyester content and heat tolerance. This produces no separate transfer film on the fabric surface, but it cannot reproduce an opaque white area.
Confirm:
- exact fiber content and garment color;
- accepted color interaction with the substrate;
- documented starting setting;
- press-mark and migration risk;
- physical sample approval for critical colors.
Sublimation-compatible heat-transfer material
A white sublimation HTV such as Siser EasySubli provides an opaque receptive layer that can be applied to a wider set of fabric colors. It changes the construction: the image is now carried on an applied material, with its own print, cut, mask, press, peel, and laundering requirements.

Evaluate:
- hand feel and edge visibility;
- cut/weed labor and small-detail limits;
- garment heat tolerance;
- dye-blocking needs on sublimated polyester;
- wash and durability requirements;
- whether the transfer can be positioned consistently at volume.
Another opaque decoration method
DTF, screen print, printable transfer material, embroidery, or another supported process may fit the job better. DyeSubSource does not treat every decoration method as sublimation and does not publish a universal substitution rule. Compare actual artwork, quantity, garment, durability, hand feel, color, and equipment constraints.

Approve the construction, not just the image
Before quoting production, have the customer or production approver evaluate the actual garment and method for:
- color and opacity;
- hand feel and transfer edge;
- placement tolerance;
- stretch and recovery where relevant;
- care requirements;
- acceptable garment-to-garment variation.
Calculate the complete labor path. A transfer material may solve opacity while adding print, dry, cut, weed, mask, and application steps. Put those steps into the job-pricing calculator rather than comparing only material price.
Stop forcing the wrong process
If the only way to reach the target appearance is to exceed the garment or transfer material’s documented heat range, stop. Select a compatible construction. A dark shirt is not a press-setting problem when the requirement is an opaque full-color image.
