Selecting coated metal, hardboard, acrylic, glass, or ceramic blanks

Match the exact sublimation-ready product to environment, geometry, handling, fixture, and source-backed heating instructions.

Choose the product before the press setting

“Metal,” “MDF,” “acrylic,” “glass,” and “ceramic” are not sufficient product identities. Coating, thickness, construction, finish, size, intended imaging side, and manufacturer process can change the required fixture and heat path. Start with an exact sublimation-ready product or SKU and its official instruction.

Generic tables are useful for scoping, but their wide ranges are a warning against treating a material family as one recipe. The DyeSubSource settings finder keeps product-specific guidance separate from generic ranges.

Coated aluminum and metal

Use coated metal when the product’s stiffness, low thickness, surface finish, or mounting method fits the job. Verify:

  • coating and imaging side;
  • protective-film removal;
  • product thickness and flatness;
  • indoor or outdoor rating from the product manufacturer;
  • orientation in the press;
  • immediate, warm, or cool paper removal;
  • safe handling and flat cooling method.

Outdoor durability is a coating and exposure specification, not something created by adding press time. Do not promise a service life from a generic “outdoor metal” label.

Hardboard and wood-based composites

Hardboard can offer stiffness and familiar display-product geometry, but thickness and product construction change heating and cooling behavior. Confirm whether the transfer is applied coating-up or through the back, whether a pad is required, and how the blank should cool.

Evaluate:

  • edge condition and moisture exposure;
  • warping after heating and cooling;
  • attachment method and load;
  • product-specific indoor/outdoor limitation;
  • whether a cork, adhesive, or hardware component must be removed before pressing.

Do not infer outdoor suitability from a sealed edge alone.

Sublimation acrylic

Some acrylic products are designed for sublimation; ordinary acrylic is not a substitute. Product-specific instructions may differ in orientation, dwell, pressure, and cooling restraint. The JPPlus SP320/SP330 setting appears because that exact product has usable documentation.

Confirm the exact material and stop if the product softens, deforms unexpectedly, produces an unfamiliar strong odor, or lacks a supported heat process. Ventilation and equipment/manufacturer safety instructions control.

Glass and ceramic

Glass and ceramic require attention to thermal shock, coating, wall thickness, and fixture. A generic mug, tile, or glass-drinkware range can be wide because the products and equipment are genuinely different.

Before production:

  • inspect for chips or cracks;
  • start with room-temperature, compatible blanks;
  • use the documented mug press, flat press, wrap, or oven method;
  • wear appropriate heat protection;
  • follow the supplier’s cooling method;
  • never quench a product unless its manufacturer explicitly allows it.

Stop on cracking, damaged heating elements, unstable fixtures, or unsupported materials.

Approve the finished construction

Inspect the full product, not only the image: coating surface, edge, flatness, attachment points, backside, and packaging contact. For signs or panels, include the installation method in the approved sample. Use the incomplete-edge workflow when edge failure may be contact or platen geometry rather than insufficient global heat.

Select suppliers by documented category in the supplier finder, then confirm current stock, coating identity, case pack, shipping, and product instruction directly.
