Commissioning a sublimation workflow with ten controlled prints
Use the first ten transfers to establish controls, map defects, and create a production record instead of chasing a perfect sample.
What ten prints can establish
The first ten transfers are not ten guesses. They are a small commissioning sequence for proving that the printer, transfer, press, blank, and recordkeeping process behave consistently.
Use an exact, documented blank when possible. Keep the same artwork, ink, paper, blank lot, press position, and starting setting unless the step specifically changes one variable. Number every transfer and its paper before pressing.
Build one control target
The target should fit the smallest production area you need to evaluate and include:
- small positive and reversed type;
- thin horizontal and vertical lines;
- neutral gray and near-neutral color patches;
- saturated color patches used in your work;
- a smooth gradient;
- a 1-inch or 25-mm dimensional reference;
- solid fields near each corner and the center.
This is not a color-certification chart. It is an operational target for spotting scaling, banding, detail loss, color shifts, and platen-zone differences.
Prints 1–2: prove the transfer input
Print two copies without pressing them. Verify that the nozzle check is complete, the paper side is correct, mirroring and scale are correct, and the two sheets appear equivalent. If visible lines, missing colors, or scale errors exist on paper, stop. The banding workflow begins with this same separation: determine whether the line exists before heat transfer.
Do not use repeated uncontrolled cleaning cycles as a substitute for the printer manufacturer’s maintenance procedure. Escalate a persistent ink-delivery problem before consuming blanks.
Prints 3–4: establish the sourced starting point
Press two blanks using the narrowest product-specific guidance in the settings finder. Document:

If the two results differ, do not optimize color yet. First investigate contact, platen zone, fixture, operator sequence, or blank variation.
Prints 5–6: check position and repeatability
Repeat the same recipe in two relevant press positions—for example, center and a production-critical edge. The intent is not to certify the platen; it is to look for a repeatable location-dependent difference.
If a clean transfer develops a weak or uneven region in the same press location, use the uneven-transfer workflow. Do not disassemble or electrically service a heat press unless qualified and authorized.
Prints 7–8: make one bounded change
Only if prints 3–6 are consistent but not acceptable, select the most plausible supported variable. Examples:
- dwell within the official range;
- pressure within the product instruction;
- product-specified orientation;
- removal timing;
- an approved pad or fixture.
Change one variable for print 7. Repeat that exact changed condition for print 8. If the improvement does not repeat, it is not yet a production setting.
Prints 9–10: production simulation
Run two transfers with the handling sequence and pace you expect in real work. Include normal loading, securing, removal, cooling, and protective-paper replacement. Watch for a recipe that looks good only when given impractical special handling.
Release decision
Release the recipe only when:
- two production-simulation results agree;
- detail, color, surface, and edges meet the job requirement;
- no safety stop condition appeared;
- the recipe names its exact scope;
- the operator can repeat the handling sequence;
- expected waste and inspection points are documented.
If the evidence remains inconsistent after ten transfers, the correct conclusion may be “not commissioned.” Save the record and escalate the specific uncertainty instead of declaring a universal setting.
