Artwork preflight for sharp, correctly sized sublimation transfers
Check physical size, effective pixel density, scaling, mirroring, color workflow, and a printed control before a file reaches the press.
Preflight at final physical size
An image does not become production-ready because its file properties say “300 DPI.” What matters for raster detail is the number of source pixels distributed across the final printed dimensions.
Use this relationship:
effective pixels per inch = pixel dimension ÷ output dimension in inches
A 2400-pixel-wide image placed at 8 inches is 300 pixels per inch. The same image enlarged to 16 inches is 150 pixels per inch unless it is resampled. Resampling creates new pixels by interpolation; it does not recover detail that was never present.
Adobe’s print-resolution documentation identifies 300 ppi as a standard high-quality starting point for close-viewed print and notes that lower resolution may be acceptable for larger work viewed from farther away. Treat 300 ppi as a useful target, not a claim that every image, printer, substrate, or viewing distance requires the same number.
File intake checklist
Record or verify:
- final output width and height;
- bleed and safe area required by the blank or fixture;
- raster pixel dimensions at that size;
- vector status for logos and type;
- linked or embedded assets;
- color space and intended output workflow;
- spot-color or brand-color expectations;
- transparency, overprint, and clipping behavior;
- mirroring requirement;
- artwork revision and approval date.
Do not judge resolution from screen zoom alone. Inspect at final output size and calculate effective pixel density for each placed raster image.
Separate image detail from printer detail
PPI describes raster image sampling. Printer DPI describes output-device dots or marking resolution; the numbers are not interchangeable. Selecting a higher driver quality cannot restore a low-resolution logo, and changing a metadata field without resampling does not add pixels.
Keep vector text and shapes as vector data as long as the print workflow supports it. Rasterize only with a known final size and sufficient resolution.
Control scaling in one place
Unexpected size changes often happen because scaling is applied in both design software and the printer driver. Establish one controlled output path:
- Build or place artwork at final size.
- Confirm page size and orientation.
- Disable unplanned “fit,” “shrink,” or percentage scaling.
- Print a dimensional reference.
- Measure the paper before pressing.
If a 1-inch reference does not print at 1 inch, fix scaling before consuming a blank.
Mirror and orientation
Many face-down sublimation transfers require mirrored artwork, but a workflow or product may handle orientation differently. Confirm the requirement in the printer or transfer-system documentation and avoid mirroring twice. Include readable control text outside the finished image when practical so an operator can catch the wrong orientation on paper.
Color workflow check
A monitor emits light; a finished substrate reflects it. A preview is not a physical proof. Confirm the supported printer, ink, paper, media setting, and color-management path. Avoid applying both an application profile and an undocumented driver correction when the workflow expects only one.
For critical work, print a known control target and approve the result on the actual blank. The wrong-color workflow helps separate global output-path errors from blank color, heat condition, or file-specific problems.
Press only a clean transfer
Before heat application, inspect the paper for:
- missing nozzle bands;
- unintended lines or roller marks;
- clipped artwork;
- incorrect page tiling;
- wrong paper side;
- wet or damaged ink areas;
- contamination that could transfer.
If the defect exists on paper, the press is not the first variable to change. A sharp, correctly sized paper control is the handoff between prepress and production.
